New city cycle map for Wolverhampton

Released: 25 June 2007

A new city cycle map has been launched as the culmination to National Bike Week events in Wolverhampton.

The map was officially launched by Councillor Peter Bilson, Deputy Leader of Wolverhampton City Council, and Councillor Jennifer Cromie, Chair of the Wolverhampton Cycle Forum, during the West Midlands Regional Track Championships at Aldersley Leisure Village.

It shows cycle lanes and shared use routes across the city, with the road network graded according to the degree of skill and experience needed to cycle each route together with a series of walking trails and footpaths.

A display area in the Mander Centre had been promoting the new city cycle map during National Bike Week. Balloons, cycle repair kits and other promotional items were available to accompany the new cycle maps.

A range of events and activities have been taking place throughout the city to celebrate National Bike Week. A new series of Monday evening ladies only cycling nights round West Park (from 6.30pm to 8.30pm) have been started by the city council’s Travelwise and Road Safety staff.

Graiseley Community Healthy Living Centre hosted a series of events and displays plus free security marking by West Midlands Police during the whole week.

Organised by Wolverhampton Wheelers, the weekend championships feature heats for Senior, Women, Youth, Junior and Veteran cyclists, and Team Pursuit events.

Aldersley Leisure Village is also the venue for the Wolverhampton Wheelers Track League which started last month and takes place each Wednesday evening from 7pm to 10pm up the beginning of September.

Senior, Women, Junior, Veteran and Youth are all represented in the league. Further information about these events can be obtained from the wolverhamptonwheelers website.

National Bike Week was also an opportunity to remind both keen cyclists and non-cyclists in the city that Wolverhampton will host the finish of the toughest stage of the 2007 Tour of Britain cycle race which takes place on Wednesday 12 September.

Issued by the press office.
