Council director lands top department of health job
Released: 21 June 2007
A Wolverhampton City Council director has been appointed to a top job in the social care directorate at the Department of Health.
Glen Mason, Director for Adults and Community, will take up his new post as
Director of Leadership and Performance for Social Care in early September.
Glen, who joined Wolverhampton three and a half years ago, said: “I am excited about my new post but I will be very sad to leave Wolverhampton. I think over the past three and a half years we have made tremendous progress and I have enjoyed every day working here to bring about better outcomes for the citizens we all work with.
“I will very much miss Wolverhampton and know the department and council as a whole will continue to move on to new successes”, he added.
Glen joined Wolverhampton as director of Social Care, Housing and Health. He had previously worked for the Department of Health as East Midlands Director of the former Social Services Inspectorate, now the Commission for Social Care Inspection.
Under his leadership, Wolverhampton Social Services improved ratings from one to a two star in national league tables in 2004/5. This rating was retained for Adult Social Care in 2005/6. Performance has continued to improve.
City council Chief Executive Richard Carr said: “I am extremely sorry to be losing such a talented and energetic member of the Corporate Management Team.
“Glen’s strong leadership and vision has brought about very significant improvements in adult social care services in particular. His passionate commitment to delivering the very best services to our citizens has under-pinned some very innovative work within his service group and the wider council which will have a lasting impact. Glen is a true pioneer”, he added.
Glen, who is married with two children, will work under Social Care Director General David Behan.
Following the appointment, Mr Behan said: “I am delighted that a person with Glen’s experience and ability is joining the department to help develop and improve the quality of social care in England.”
Glen became Director for Adults and Community in 2005 and has spearheaded an innovative £9.3 million programme to transform the way social care services are delivered to some of the city’s most vulnerable people.
He has also created a strong and coherent Adults and Community service group, incorporating leisure and cultural services, adult and community learning and community services.
