‘Quick reads’ for new city college readers group
Released: 19 June 2007
A new reading group set up by Wolverhampton’s Library Service at the beginning of the year for adults with learning difficulties is proving very popular.
The students, all from the City of Wolverhampton College, have been reading books from the ‘Quick Reads’ collection – available in libraries - which contain books from well-known authors but are shorter in length and are ideal as ‘beach reads’ or for those with little time for reading.
The reading group at the college was established as part of the libraries’ partnership with the BBC ‘RaW’ campaign to promote reading and writing.
Special Needs Manager for Wolverhampton Libraries, Paddy Quick, explained: “I was invited to the college to speak to the students about libraries generally and particularly about the ‘Quick Reads’ series.
”There were about a dozen students in the group who were interested in working through one of the ‘Quick Reads’ books and writing a review of it”, he added.
The group chose ‘The Book Boy’ by Joanna Trollope and the library supplied ordinary copies as well as versions in large print and on CD.
The students enjoyed the book, saying: “was an interesting and intriguing book and we all agree that we could recommend it”.
The students have subsequently moved onto their second book – ‘The Thief’ by Ruth Rendell. Their tutor has said that this part of their college course had proved so popular that they hoped to build it into a separate course in itself with recognised accreditation.
There are a range of readers’ groups hosted by Wolverhampton libraries, all of which are free to join. Books are provided by the library service and are also borrowed free of charge.
