Released: 12 June 2007

‘Dr. Bike’ surgeries, the launch of a new city cycle map and the West Midlands Regional Track Championships at Aldersley Leisure Village are just a few of the many National Bike Week events being staged in Wolverhampton next week (Saturday 16 June to Sunday 24 June).

The new city cycle map is to be officially launched on Saturday 23 June, by Councillor Peter Bilson, Deputy Leader of Wolverhampton City Council, and Councillor Jennifer Cromie, Chair of the Wolverhampton Cycle Forum, during the West Midlands Regional Track Championships at Aldersley Leisure Village.

The cycle map shows cycle lanes and shared use routes across the city with the road network graded according to the degree of skill and experience needed to cycle each route together with a series of walking trails and footpaths.

A display area in the Mander Centre (between Tesco and T J Hughes) will be promoting the new city cycle map on  18 to 20 June (11.00am to 2.30pm), 22 June (11.00am to 2.30pm), 23 June (10.00am to 4.00pm) and 24 June (12.00noon to 2.00pm). Balloons, cycle repair kits and other promotional items will also be available to accompany the new cycle maps.

A new secure cycle storage facility, for staff who cycle to work at the civic centre, will be available for the first time during National Bike Week. ‘Dr. Bike’ lunchtime surgeries are being held on Tuesday, June 19th and Thursday 21 June, between 12.00am and 2.00pm, at the civic centre for any staff who want a cycle check up.

‘Dr. Bike’ will also be touring city schools to ensure that local youngsters are riding safe cycles.

A new series of Monday evening ladies only cycling nights round West Park (from 6.30pm to 8.30pm) are also being started by the city council’s Travelwise and Road Safety staff.

Graiseley Community Healthy Living Centre is hosting a display and free safety check by Blakenhall Cycle Repair Shop (Mon 18 June); the latest bike technology by Fred Williams Cycles and an exercise nutrition display (Wed 20 June); a fundraising stationary bike ride in aid of Leukaemia Research (Thurs 21 June); a children’s accompanied bike ride around Blakenhall Park (Fri 22 Jun); plus free security marking by West Midlands Police during the whole week.

Anyone visiting the centre by bike or taking part on the charity bike ride can use the centre for half price. Further details of all the Graiseley Community Healthy Living Centre events can be obtained from Wolverhampton 01902 552355.

On Saturday 23 June (10,00am to 4.00pm) and Sunday 24 June (10.00am to 1.00pm) the West Midlands Regional Track Championships are being held at Aldersley Leisure Village.

Organised by Wolverhampton Wheelers, the weekend championships feature heats for senior, women, youth, junior and veteran cyclists, and team pursuit events.
