Mayor to open new bungalows scheme

Released: 08 June 2007

The Mayor of Wolverhampton will be guest of honour at the opening of a new sheltered scheme for vulnerable people in the city.

Councillor Trudy Bowen will attend the opening ceremony at Lorien Close in Warstones – a development of eight two-bedroom bungalows for people with learning disabilities and vulnerable older people.

The new bungalows, off Rindleford Avenue, have been developed by the city council in partnership with Bromford Housing Association.

The opening ceremony will take place at 11.30am on Wednesday 20 June and is one of the events planned as a bumper schedule of activities during Learning Disability Week.

The development of more homes in the city for people with a learning disability is one of the main elements of the Joint Learning Disability Strategy designed to give vulnerable adults more choice and independence in their lives

Councillor Geoff Foster, cabinet member for adults, said:  “We have identified the need to transform local services in order to ensure that people with a learning disability and their family carers can access the most appropriate services.

“The opening of these new bungalows in partnership with Bromford Housing Association provides quality homes for people with a learning disability and other vulnerable adults.

“We have a vision where the most vulnerable of this city are included and consulted on their lives and their care along with their carers.”

Other developments include:

• The new short breaks service at Ernest Bold Court in Bilston opened in May. This is a new building which offers planned breaks for people with a learning disability and carers and can support families during times of crisis.

• A second service to support people in crisis will start in June. Mencap will be providing an assertive outreach service which will work with people in their own homes.

• From mid-June the Assessment and Treatment service will be fully operational at 44 Pond Lane where the Joint Learning Disabilities Team is based. This service will be able to admit up to five people at a time for active treatment.

Issued by the press office.
