Latest review of polling districts

Released: 31 July 2007

Wolverhampton City Council is carrying out a review of parliamentary polling districts and polling places in the Parliamentary Constituencies of Wolverhampton North East, Wolverhampton South East and Wolverhampton South West.

All local authorities have a statutory duty to keep polling districts under general review. However as a result of changes introduced by Section 16 of the Electoral Administration Act 2006, councils have been instructed to carry out a full review of polling districts, polling places and polling stations before the end of this current year.

The emphasis of the review is on convenience of access for all electors, but particularly for electors with any type of disability.

It follows on from the introduction last year of a duty imposed on all Registration and Returning Officers to promote the electoral process to encourage more people to vote.

The Returning Officer will comment on the suitability of the proposed polling station(s) within each polling district.

Electors residing in the above constituencies are invited to make representations in connection with the review or comment on the council’s or the Returning Officer’s proposals.

The council also welcomes any person or group with expertise in the access requirements of persons with any type of disability to make representations, comments or suggestions on the proposals made by the council or the Returning Officer.

Information concerning the existing arrangements can be obtained from the Electoral Registration and Elections Office (see address below) or by contacting www.wolverhampton.gov.uk/pollingdistricts where a submissions form is also available.

The final date for submission of representations is Friday, September 14th, 2007.

All persons or bodies who make representations should, where possible or where relevant, suggest alternative places that can be used as polling places.

Representations, comments etc. should be submitted in writing to the Electoral Registration and Elections Office by email or by post to Blossoms Fold, off North Street, Wolverhampton, WV1 4HJ.

The review will be completed in time for any alterations to the current arrangements to come into effect on the date of publication of the Register of Electors in December 2007.

Issued by the press office.
