Penn Hall School finalist in National Lottery awards

Released: 31 July 2007

Penn Hall School has been nominated and reached the final ten in the category of Best Education Project in this year’s National Lottery Awards.

The school in Vicarage Road, Penn, has been included for its Adventurous and Creative Activity Trail, which was developed with funding from a range of sources including £50,000 from the Big Lottery Fund as part of the New Opportunities for PE and Sport Programme.

In order to progress to the final three Penn Hall needs public votes – and voting closes mid-day this Friday (August 3rd). Voting can be done by logging on to the Lottery Good Causes website or by calling 0845 386 8067 (local rate call).

Cabinet Member for Schools, Councillor Christine Irvine, said: “It’s brilliant news that Penn Hall’s nomination has made it through to the last ten finalists and I would encourage everyone in Wolverhampton to vote for the school to reach the final three”.

Based on a Pirate Ship theme, the Adventurous and Creative Activity Trail is a unique and innovative development that provides a range of exciting, challenging and creative opportunities for both physically disabled and able-bodied children.

Problem solving and craft activities are included along the woodland trail, which is also open to other local schools and community groups.

The school’s existing playground has been extended to provide easy access for wheelchair users to the area of woodland that is attached to the school.

Lottery funding helped fund the design of bespoke wheelchair abseil and zip wire equipment, as well as a wider range of outdoor adventure play equipment.

Pupils now have access to numerous outdoor activities as well as a range of disability accessible activity areas.

On the Lottery good causes web page detailing the nomination it says: “The community now has a fantastic facility and resource that is accessible to everyone, regardless of ability. The Adventurous and Creative Activity Trail will benefit both the children at Penn Hall School and the local community for years to come”.

Issued by the press office.
