City Council team manager beats the elements to raise money for hospice
Released: 24 July 2007
A walker battled terrible weather to help raise more than £10,000 for Compton Hospice.
Suzanne Smith, a team manager with Wolverhampton City Council’s Physical and Sensory Disabilities Team, was one of a group of around 20 trekkers from the city who walked 25 miles along Hadrian’s Wall on 14 and 15 July.
Suzanne, who lives locally and also serves as a magistrate in Walsall, raised £700 herself and said it was an enjoyable challenge - despite the downpours.
She said: “The weather was atrocious on the Friday evening and it didn't bode well when we arrived on the camp-site and the tents weren't quite ready and the caterer hadn't arrived.
“But we were dropped off at the nearest pub for what turned out to be a lovely meal and the warmest couple of hours of the weekend.
“There was plenty of rain on the Saturday and one walker managed to break her ankle after the first hour, which was a huge disappointment. She had the option to return to Wolverhampton but remained with us and walked over the finish line on Sunday using her crutches.”
Suzanne added: “It was a great experience and I met a really interesting group of people.”
