Summer holiday sports schemes

Released: Thursday 19 July 2007

Wolverhampton City Council’s Sport Development Unit is working in partnership with clubs and governing bodies across Wolverhampton to ensure young people can enjoy a summer full of sporting activity.

The summer programme will be jump-started with the Multisport scheme which will take place at Aldersley Leisure Village from Monday July 23 to Thursday July 26, from 10am to 2.30pm each day.

Participants will get the chance to experience several sports throughout the scheme including volleyball, squash, athletics, tag rugby and cricket. This year, young people will also be able to try climbing when experts from the Wolf Mountain climbing centre set up a climbing wall at the leisure village.

All sporting activities will be led by qualified coaches and any young people between eight and 15 years old are welcome to register at a cost of £26.

Young people will then be able to take part in the ever popular Norwich Union Star:track scheme.

Norwich Union Star:track is a UK Athletics development initiative for children aged between eight and 15 years old.

While on the scheme, young people are introduced to athletics in an exciting format and have the opportunity to experiment with all the different athletics events, including some they might never have tried in school.

Star:track also gives those who already take part in athletics activities an opportunity to develop their skills further with UK Athletics qualified coaches.

The course will run from Monday 20 August to Friday 24 August at Aldersley Leisure Village, from 9.30am to 1.30pm each day.  The course costs £30 and each participant will receive a Star:track goody bag, t-shirt and certificate.

For further information on either of these summer schemes or to request an application form, please contact Jan Huntbatch on 01902 556220 or e-mail sport.development@wolverhampton.gov.uk.
