Wolverhampton's splashtastic summer
Released: 17 July 2007
Children in Wolverhampton are invited to take the plunge this summer with two ‘splashtastic’ swimming initiatives on offer at council leisure facilities.
Wolverhampton City Council’s Sport and Recreation Service is giving young people aged 16 and under the chance to swim at general public swimming sessions for just 50p and for free at family sessions during the school summer holidays.
Councillor John Reynolds, Cabinet Member for Leisure and Culture, said: “These Splashtastic Summer initiatives provide a great opportunity for children to take part in a fun and healthy activity during the school break.
“They are part of wider efforts to encourage young people to adopt a healthier and more active lifestyle, as outlined in the Wolverhampton Swimming Strategy.
“I hope that hundreds of children take the chance to benefit from the schemes in the coming summer weeks and months.”
The '50p Anytime' initiative will allow young people to swim for 50p during any general public swimming session at Bilston Leisure Centre or Central Baths. This offer saves each child almost £1 on the cost of a regular junior swim and they do not have to register or apply for passes.
At weekends children can also swim for free at family sessions when accompanied by a paying adult. Up to three children can swim for free per adult.
Family sessions will be held at Bilston Leisure Centre on Saturdays from 9am to 12 noon and Sundays from 2pm to 4.30pm. Family sessions will take place at Central Baths on Saturdays from 2pm to 4pm and Sundays from 9am to 12 noon.
Both initiatives run from Saturday July 21 until Sunday September 2, 2007.

In addition the Sport and Recreation Service has co-ordinated a programme of swimming lessons in partnership with the council’s Children and Young People section. Through this link with schools, young people in priority areas will be supported in working to achieve the National Curriculum requirements for Key Stage Two (age seven to 11).
