Suzanne Smith trains for her trek

City council team manager preparing for charity trek

Released: 9 July 2007

A keen walker is preparing to pull on her boots to help a Wolverhampton hospice.

Suzanne Smith will trek 25 miles along Hadrian’s Wall on Saturday and Sunday (14 and 15 July) to help raise more than £10,000 for Compton Hospice.

Suzanne, a Team Manager with Wolverhampton City Council’s Physical and Sensory Disabilities Team based at the Neville Garratt Centre for Independent Living, is getting ready with regular sessions at the Firewalker gym in the city.

Owner Kirkwood Walker, a former Child Protection Team Manager with the council, has already pledged Suzanne sponsorship to the tune of £100.

Suzanne will be part of a bigger team of 20 or so walkers taking on the challenge in aid of the hospice. She said: “I have worked for the council for 20 years and thanks to my social work training I developed an interest in palliative care, working with ward staff and social workers at Compton Hospice.

“I decided this would be a really good way of both contributing to a local charity and keeping fit.”

Suzanne, who lives locally and also serves as a magistrate in Walsall, has already been pledged around £650 and together the team expects to raise more than £10,000.

She added: “It’s going to be great - it’s a nice way to meet other people and raise money for a local charity at the same time.”

To sponsor Suzanne contact her at the Neville Garratt Centre on 01902 553652.

Issued by the press office.
