Chance to get back into the classroom

Released: 6 July 2007

People are being encouraged to learn something new… by going back to the classroom.

Enrolment is now underway for a huge range of courses - covering everything from languages, literacy and numeracy, to food, floristry, health and fitness and arts and crafts - provided by Wolverhampton City Council’s Adult Education Service.

“Thousands of people have changed their lives for the better thanks to our courses,” said AES head Chris Parsons.

“Our message this year to adult learners is, put away any doubts and fears you may have and take the plunge - you’ll be glad you did.”

“The only qualification you’ll need to sign up is enthusiasm,” said Chris, who added: “Most of our courses do not require formal entry qualifications. And even if you’ve been out of education for a long time, our dedicated staff are here to give you all the support you need to enjoy your learning to the full and achieve your potential.”

The AES offers a wide range of courses to suit all interests. Most last from 30 to 36 weeks, and also include professional studies, ICT and performing arts along with sessions run by the Workers’ Educational Association covering subjects as diverse as 20th century music, the Wars of the Roses, industrial archaeology and America after George Bush.

Adults can study for pleasure, to boost their job prospects with vocational qualifications or even to enter university. Chris added: “Very often, people start in a small way but get the learning bug and take it all the way to higher education.

“Our courses are designed for adults from all sorts of backgrounds and circumstances - from unemployed and retired people to those who want to return to the job market or improve their prospects.”

There are two special enrolment periods, next week and September. On Monday July 9, enrolment in health and fitness courses takes place at Old Hall Street, while food, first aid, floristry and performing arts courses are recruiting at Pendeford Community Learning Centre. Then on Tuesday July 10, arts, crafts and media and ICT courses are enrolling at Old Hall Street, with ICT only at Pendeford.

The main enrolment takes place in September, with all classes signing up students from Monday, September 3, to Thursday, September 6, at both the Old Hall Street and Pendeford sites. There will also be specific open days for some courses.
