Work starts on £15 million new school scheme

Released: 4 July 2007

Work is beginning this week on a £15 million scheme to rebuild two Wolverhampton schools and provide community facilities.

The new building will be on the site currently occupied by Stowlawn Primary School, Green Park Special School and Stowlawn Community Centre in Green Park Avenue in Bilston.

This major construction project will see the old buildings demolished and replaced by brand new facilities which will be joined together to form a campus known as The Willows. While the schools will be based on a campus-style development, they will retain their existing names and independent identity.

The impressive design includes two internal court-yards providing safe and stimulating areas for children to work and play, two PE halls - one with external changing rooms which can be accessed from outside, and a large performance space for a range of school and community activities. The outside space will be vibrant and exciting with covered outdoor areas for the children of both schools.

Construction firm Willmott Dixon have been selected by Wolverhampton City Council to build The Willows. Today  the Mayor launched the next phase of the enabling works which will pave the way for main building works later in the year.

During the phased construction pupils from both schools will be able to stay on site. It is anticipated that the new Stowlawn Primary will be completed in 2009 and Green Park by 2010.

Funding for the scheme has come from the Department for Education and Skills after a successful bid from the city council.

Throughout the design process consultations have taken place with all stakeholders including parents, pupils and school staff.

Councillor Christine Irvine, Cabinet Member for Schools, said: “I am delighted that building work is starting on this major £15 million development for Bilston.

“This will be landmark development which will replace old facilities with something that is modern and fit for purpose.

“The Willows will have improved access, shared facilities and extended use outside of normal school hours.”
