Strict enforcement of parking regulations

Released: 2 July 2007

Wolverhampton City Council has today (Monday, July 2nd) announced that there will be strict enforcement of parking regulations across Wolverhampton, and in particular within the city centre, during the current national alert status.

Parking enforcement has been the responsibility of the city council from the beginning of February this year and the increase in the number of parking attendants has already resulted in a higher profile for the service.

Working in conjunction with West Midlands Police, the city council’s parking attendants will be extra vigilant for illegal or suspicious incidences of parking, over and above their usual enforcement role.

Motorists, who should in any case be abiding by the legal parking requirements in force at any given location, should also be mindful of the possible repercussions of their illegal or inconsiderate parking whilst the UK is on the highest alert for possible further terrorist attacks.

Wolverhampton City Council Chief Executive, Richard Carr, said “Whilst there is no reported specific threat to Wolverhampton, it is important that we are all alert to any suspicious activity and know who to contact.

“We are reviewing a range of security arrangements at the moment, so that we can reassure both the public and our staff that everything is being done to minimise the opportunity for any incident locally but also so that we could respond effectively if anything untoward did occur”, he added.

If anyone believes a vehicle, person or package is suspicious West Midlands Police would urge them not to approach but to contact the Police on 0845 113 50000, the anti Terrorist Hotline on 0800 789321 or call 999 for emergencies.

Further information is available from the WolfCityAlert and West Midlands Police websites.
