Casino decision for Wolverhampton
Released: 30 january 2007
Wolverhampton has been selected as a location for a new casino it has been announced today (Tuesday January 30).
The Government’s Casino Advisory Panel has today recommended to the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport the best locations for one regional casino plus eight large and eight small casinos across Britain.
Councillor Peter Bilson, Wolverhampton City Council deputy leader and cabinet member for regeneration and enterprise, welcomed today’s positive news on the city’s bid to be the site of a small casino.
He said: “This is an exciting development for us. Our bid demonstrated, in light of the existing regeneration activity within the city, how much we can offer as a leisure location.”
If the Secretary of State adopts the panel’s recommendations, each local authority will be able to determine the most appropriate site within their area.
If the city receives more applications for a casino premises licence than it can grant, it will have to determine a process to select the most appropriate, which may be a competitive process. The Government intends to issue a code of practice on how such competitions should be conducted. However it is unlikely that any competition will be held before mid-2007 at the earliest.
