Use real nappies and save £500
Released: 29 January 2007
A campaign has been launched to encourage Wolverhampton parents to buy reusable nappies. Switching from disposable to cloth nappies can save the average family £500 a year. They are also better for the environment because they can be washed and reused instead of thrown away.
Across Britain, eight million disposable nappies are thrown away each year and go to landfill sites. Wolverhampton’s Waste and Recycling Partnership is now offering people £30 cash-back to parents who are using reusable nappies for their babies. Parents currently using disposable nappies who want to give real nappies a try can get a two-week’s supply for free.
Councillor Pat Byrne, cabinet member for the environment, said that the re-use of what would otherwise be household rubbish was an important part of the city’s waste strategy. She added: ”Reusable nappies cost a fraction of the cost of their disposable counterparts and they are better for the environment. They help save the planet as well as the pounds in your wallet.
“With this new scheme we are rewarding people who are already using reusable nappies and encouraging those who don’t to consider making the switch.”
Robin and Lexi Lawrence, parents from Tettenhall, Wolverhampton, helped to launch the campaign today (SAT JAN 27). With one toddler and another baby on the way, they are already committed real nappy users.
Mr Lawrence said: “We have made a conscious decision to use real nappies because they are extremely good for the environment. By joining schemes such as this, we are reducing the amount of waste that is produced. Furthermore, it has saved us a vast amount of money.”
Real nappies come in a selection of styles and are suitable for both new born babies and toddlers. They can be washed easily in a washing machine at 60°c. Modern reusable nappies do not require safety pins and can be fastened with poppers, Velcro or plastic grips.
