Summer Row statement

Released: 26 January 2007

Wolverhampton City Council is working with Multi Development UK Ltd to address local concerns about the forthcoming Summer Row Development.

The 55,000 sq m scheme will provide a new department store, along with other retail, leisure and residential use in a significant expansion of the city centre’s retail core.

Whilst there is broad support for the development, a number of objections were received following the compulsory purchase order.

A public inquiry has been set for 17th April, and the council and Multi are looking at each objection in detail with a view to resolving them, where possible, prior to the inquiry. Coffee chain Starbucks has already withdrawn its objections.

The council has launched a regular series of newsletters aimed at interested parties which gives regular updates on the scheme’s progress, and has distributed it widely.

In addition, businesses or individuals affected by the proposals may discuss their concerns at a series of special surgeries in the Civic Centre on 29th and 30th January.

Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Enterprise, Councillor Peter Bilson, said: “Summer Row is one of the most significant developments in our city’s ongoing regeneration.

“It will bring many new jobs and opportunities to Wolverhampton, creating the sustainable city centre which we need to take us even further forward as a thriving 21st century city.

“We will continue to work closely with everyone affected by the scheme in order to keep any disruption to a minimum”, he added.

Issued by the press office.
