Food allergy advice packs available to caterers

Released: 24 January 2007

Wolverhampton City Council is working in partnership with local authorities across the West Midlands to supply catering businesses with information and advice on food allergies.

Staff from the council’s Food and Environmental Safety team have written to caterers in Wolverhampton to inform them that food allergy advice packs are now available.

The pack has been developed by the Central England Trading Standards Authorities (CEnTSA) which consists of 14 councils.

It is designed to help minimise accidental contamination and deal effectively with enquiries from customers who have food allergies.

Wolverhampton City Council officers have also been working with manufacturers in the city to make them aware of their legal requirements regarding food allergies.

Councillor Pat Byrne, Wolverhampton City Council’s Cabinet Member for the Environment said: “It is important that caterers and manufacturers are provided with all the information and advice on food allergies they need so they can help their customers.

“This pack is a great way to provide valuable assistance to a large number of businesses in a short time, and is a good example of councils working together to share their expertise and resources.”

The advice pack includes:

  • An advisory leaflet
  • A poster and menu stickers encouraging customers to ask for further information
  • A risk assessment which businesses can use to identify critical control points in the food preparation process

Businesses that do not already have a pack can obtain one by calling Food and Environmental Safety on 01902 554350.

Issued by the press office.
