Local derby match day advice

Released: 23 January 2007

Police in Wolverhampton are advising motorists to expect some diversions on city centre roads on Sunday 28 January for the Wolverhampton Wanderers v West Bromwich Albion FA Cup fourth round fixture at 12noon.

A number of roads may be closed for public safety reasons; police are currently liaising with the local authority and Highways agency. Fans should also be aware that they may not be able to reach the Molineux via usual routes but diversions will be in place.

Extra officers will be deployed in the city centre, around Molineux and at key transport locations such as the railway and bus station and the Metro to provide reassurance to members of the public along with colleagues from British Transport Police.

Chief Superintendent Richard Green, commander at Bilston Street police station, warned potential troublemakers not to use the local derby as an excuse for causing problems.

"We expect the majority of fans will relish the occasion in the best tradition of these two famous football clubs, but we are prepared to deal with the minority who may see it as an opportunity to cause trouble.

"Our message to this minority is that we have always taken a robust stance against football disorder to ensure that genuine supporters have an enjoyable day and residents of Wolverhampton experience the minimum of disruption.

"Any anti social behaviour or public disorder will not be tolerated. We aim to prevent the minority who might cause trouble from spoiling things for the majority of law-abiding fans.

"Anyone arrested could find themselves charged and before the courts. Violent disorder can carry a custodial sentence and offenders could be subject to football banning orders."

Anyone travelling to the match by car is asked to park their vehicle safely and securely and not leave any valuables on show

Issued by on behalf of West Midlands Police, Press Office.
