Key stage 4, post achievement and attainment tables

Released: 11 January 2007

Councillor Geoff Foster, Wolverhampton’s cabinet member for schools, said: “Attainment and achievement tables have been released today for all local authorities showing GCSE and post-16 performance.

For the seventh year in a row the results for pupils achieving 5 or more A* to C results have improved in Wolverhampton to 55.9%.

Over the last four years in particular this improvement has been ahead of the national average and value added progress is good.

GCSE point scores in the city, which reflect the achievement of all students in all subjects, are now above national averages. This is an excellent result of which schools are rightly proud. This is largely due to effective work across the city to provide courses that suit students’ needs.

Wolverhampton is a national leader in this respect. The consequence is starting to be seen in sixth forms where more young people are staying on and results are beginning to improve.

New measures of performance that include English and mathematics at GCSE show where attention will focus in future. However current progress in this measure, again ahead of national averages, gives grounds for confidence in the effectiveness of Wolverhampton schools and the capabilities of their students.

I am delighted with the rising trends in attainment and see this as further evidence that the investment that the Government is planning to make in school buildings in the City will be money well spent.”

Issued by the press office.
