Calling all budding artists

Released: 11 January 2007

Budding young artists in Wolverhampton could see their designs appear across the city thanks to a new poster competition. Wolverhampton Waste and Recycling Partnership is asking children aged five to eleven to create a poster that can be used to promote recycling.

The winning design will appear on the side of seven new bin lorries and at the household waste recycling centres at Anchor Lane and Shaw Road. It is also likely to feature on future promotional materials.

The competition has been split into two age categories – five to eight-year-olds and nine to eleven-year-olds. Three winners will be picked from each category and they will all receive vouchers for WH Smith.

Councillor Pat Byrne, cabinet member for the environment, said that she hoped as many young people would enter the competition as possible. She added: “As a council we are committed to encouraging people to reduce, reuse and recycle their waste. We want as many young people as possible to enter this competition and show us their designs for encouraging people to recycle. We know that children are passionate about caring for the environment and I am sure we are going to see some brilliant designs.”

Each poster should be submitted on A4 paper or card. The entries will be judged by an independent panel.

Entries, which must include a note with the child’s name and contact details, should be sent to Judy Watton, Enterprise Plc, Waste & Recycling Services, Hickman Avenue, Wolverhampton, WV1 2BY. The closing date is February 23.

Issued by the press office.
