Alan Hart is new city Alderman
Released: 21 December 2007
City councillors have unanimously voted for former Conservative Mayor Alan Hart to become Wolverhampton’s sixth Honorary Alderman.
The honour is awarded to persons who have, in the opinion of the council, rendered eminent services to the council, but who are not then serving councillors of the council.
Alan Hart had been a councillor for more than three decades when he retired earlier this year.
Chair of Standards Committee, Mr Jim Parker, formally moved the proposal, which was seconded by the Mayor, Councillor Trudy Bowen, and carried by the unanimous vote of Members to rousing cheers at the extra-ordinary council meeting called in order to confer the honour.
Council Leader, Councillor Roger Lawrence, Leader of the Conservatives, Councillor Paddy Bradley and Councillor Richard Whitehouse on behalf of the Liberal Democrats, all paid tribute to Alan Hart’s years of public service.
During his 31 years of public service Alan Hart had spent some 20 years involved with planning matters, including a period as Chair of Planning and Development Committee in the early 1990’s.
Together with Wolverhampton’s elevation to city status, Alan cited his Mayoralty and being involved during the many years dealing with planning with some of the most dramatic changes to Wolverhampton in recent times, as the most satisfying moments in his political career.
Alderman Hart received his commemorative sterling silver parcel gilt pendant and bar featuring a hand enamelled painted city crest on an ‘old gold’ ribbon from the Mayor.
