Improvement work at leisure centre

Released: 21 December 2007

Improvement work costing £78,000 will get underway at Central Baths in the New Year.

Customers will notice major enhancements ranging from new toilets to better access for disabled users when the work is finished early next month.

It is being undertaken by Wolverhampton City Council to ensure the facility complies with the Disability Discrimination Act.

Improvements includes better access from the car park and around the foyer area, a lower reception counter suitable for wheelchair users, additional fire prevention devices for customers with hearing impairments, a larger family changing room, new toilets and better poolside viewing areas for people with wheelchairs or pushchairs.

Though Central Baths will remain open while some of the work goes ahead, it will be necessary to close the facility for 12 days from Monday, 7 January.

Ian Bosworth, Operations Manager, said: “While we regret having to temporarily close the facility, due to the nature and location of the work to the changing rooms, poolside and reception, it will be necessary to ensure the health and safety of customers, staff, and contractors.

“We would ask customers to bear with us during the improvement work, and look forward to welcoming them back to an even better Central Baths on Saturday, 19 January.

“Customers will, of course, be able to use our alternative facilities at Aldersley Leisure Village, Bilston Leisure Centre and Wolverhampton Swimming and Fitness Centre.”

The work is the latest big money investment to be made in the city council-run facility.  Last month, a £25,000 revamp of the gym saw a large range of new fitness equipment installed.

Ian added: “Customers are telling us that they are delighted with the new-look gym and I am confident that the other work we are undertaking will improve their leisure centre experience still further.”
