Plasma display screen stolen from Central Library
Released: 21 December 2007
A brand new plasma display screen was stolen from Central Library just an hour after it had been tested and switched on.
The unit was installed at the end of last week in the entrance foyer at Snow Hill. On Tuesday afternoon it was tested on site by an engineer at about a quarter past four and was stolen at a quarter past five.
Two thieves wrenched the screen from its brackets without realising the unit was also bolted to the wall. Most of the casing remained on the wall with broken pieces scattered across the floor as the two white males left with just the front portion of the screen which cannot be used for any other purpose than it was intended.
CCTV security cameras in the library captured the whole incident and the city council is now liaising with West Midlands Police who have a very clear picture of the offenders from the footage.
Anyone who may have seen two white males leaving the Central Library in Snow Hill at 5.15pm on Tuesday afternoon with the plasma screen, or who has information about the theft or those responsible, is asked to contact the Police at Bilston Street.
Cabinet Member for Leisure and Culture, Councillor John Reynolds, said: “Seasonal goodwill was the last thing on the minds of these two incompetent opportunist thieves.
“Not only have they deprived library customers of a useful community information facility they have taken something which will be of absolutely no use whatsoever to them or anyone else as the plasma screen cannot be used for any other purpose than that which it was intended”.
