People needed to care for older children

Released: 13 December 2007

People thinking about fostering and adoption are being urged to consider coming forward to care for children aged over 12 years old.

Fostering and Adoption in Wolverhampton, part of the city council, is calling on more people to care for older children as they are often not considered when people look into fostering or adopting.

Councillor Paula Brookfield, Wolverhampton City Council Cabinet Member for Children and Young People, said: “We want to inform people who are thinking about fostering and adoption that there is a specific need to place older children, particularly those aged 12 years of age and over.

“Caring for older children can bring many rewards such as a sense of fun and the excitement of youth and energy while you can offer them the chance of a brighter future.”

A child could need care for any number of reasons. Fostering and Adoption in Wolverhampton is looking for new long term foster carers, in particular, who would be able to support a child for a number of years.

Councillor Brookfield added that people should not let the misconceptions that can surround fostering and adoption stop them from enquiring further.

“Many people think that you have to be married with a family and own your own home to foster or adopt - this simply is not true.

“Fostering and Adoption in Wolverhampton is looking for a range of people to care for all kinds of children.”

She added that financial and other support was available, providing the option for people to have a career in fostering.

Anyone who would like to find out more information can call Fostering and Adoption in Wolverhampton on 0800 0730 189.
