Anti drink driving campaign 2007
Released: 13 December 2007
Drivers in Wolverhampton are being urged to leave the car at home when they go out to celebrate the festive season this year.
It takes less than people think to become a drink driver, there is no failsafe guide as to how much they can drink and stay under the limit. The amount and type of alcoholic drink and people’s weight, sex, age and metabolism will all play their part. The only safe option is for people not to drink if they plan to drive.
Drivers are also being urged to remember that alcohol can take sometime to leave the body’s system, this may mean that individuals are still over the drink drive limit the morning after a night out celebrating.
Wolverhampton City Council’s Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Environment, Councillor Peter Bilson, said: “People need to be aware that after a night out drinking over the festive season they may be over the drink drive limit the following morning. A sensible approach to drinking the night before is required if you are planning a journey the next day”.
Wolverhampton City Council’s road safety team will be helping to promote the safe drinking message by distributing publicity packs to young drivers at an event being held at the Wulfrun Hall this coming Friday 14 December.
Organised by West Midlands Police and West Midlands Fire Brigade, the event will see sixth formers from across the city watch a hard hitting presentation about the dangers of driving whilst under the influence of drink or drugs.
The road safety team is also working in partnership with West Midlands Fire Brigade and Wolverhampton Primary Care Trust to support enforcement exercises being carried out by West Midlands Police over the festive period.
The road policing unit will be running a targeted programme of enforcement activity related to drink driving across the city during December. Those found over the limit will be in court the next day and will be given an interim ban.
