Celebration of learners’ achievements

Released: 11 December 2007

Adult learners from East Park and Portobello will be rewarded for going back to college with a presentation evening this week.

The Celebration of Learners will recognise the achievements of dozens of people who have boosted their information technology skills thanks to courses run by Wolverhampton City Council’s Adult Education Service.

Councillor John Reynolds, Cabinet Member for Leisure and Culture, will present awards to the learners during a ceremony at Deansfield High School on Thursday 13 December.

Their awards include qualifications such as Equal Skills, recognised by the British Computer Society, Literacy And Information Technology certificates and diplomas and the European Computer Driving Licence.

Howard Wallace, Adult Education Service Marketing Manager, said: “The learners include adults of all ages. Nearly a third are young mothers wanting to gain qualifications to help them back into work, some of whom have already gained part-time employment.

“Some work in the day and attend classes in the evening, while others are shift workers. We have a number of retired learners who have gone back to college to gain further qualifications, as well as current students who are taking advantage of the extra sessions to boost their IT skills.

“The ceremony is being held to celebrate their achievements and to promote the opportunities available for local people to gain confidence, new skills and even qualifications within a learning environment.

“I would like to congratulate all those who have re-entered education and worked so hard towards gaining their qualifications.

“They are all learners of varying ability and ages but they are all working towards a common goal. I hope they enjoy their moment in the spotlight.”
