David in race to raise charity cash
Released: 14 August 2007
A Wolverhampton City Council worker is preparing to get on his bike to raise money for cancer charities – in memory of his mother and sister-in-law.
David McGlynn will complete the cycle challenge being held at the Carver Wolverhampton City Marathon at West Park on Sunday, September 2.
And he will be raising money for four charities - Macmillan Cancer Support, Compton Hospice, Breast Cancer Campaign and Cancer Research UK, following the tragic loss of his mother Joan and sister in-law Carole to cancer last year.
David said: “Most people have had their lives touched by various forms of this disease through the loss of a loved one, a relative, friend or someone they have known.
“Funding for research is crucial, both my mother and sister-in-law’s cancer started as breast cancer, and I know of so many women who have been or are suffering from this form of the disease.”
David, who lives in Claregate and is landscape manager at the city council, is a keen cyclist, regularly riding up to 50 miles a day.
He said: “I will be cycling nine miles - I would prefer it to be a much longer course but they had to shorten it for safety reasons as some people were treating it as a race.”
David chose to raise cash for Macmillan Cancer Support as he said the charity offered Joan and Carole wonderful help during their illnesses.
He added: “Compton Hospice looked after my mother and the staff there were absolutely amazing.”
David hopes to raise around £500 and will split the total between the four charities.
Originally held in 1982 and then resurrected as an annual event from 1998, the Carver Wolverhampton City Marathon attracts thousands of runners and disabled athletes.
The cycle challenge starts a few minutes before the main races, of which there are three; a full 26-mile marathon, half marathon and half marathon relay challenge.
