Londonderry exchange trip
Released: 8 August 2007
A group of 10 young people from Wolverhampton have set off to Northern Ireland on the second leg of an action-packed youth exchange programme.
The 14 to 17 year olds travelled to Londonderry yesterday for just under a week.
During their stay the year 10 pupils from Our Lady and St Chad Catholic Sports College and year 12 pupils from Moreton Community School are visiting the Northern Ireland Parliament, the Giant’s Causeway, Creggan Country Park and the Bloody Sunday Centre, after studying this day in history.
The group is also taking part in intercultural workshops and evening events, including spending time with an exchange group from Bulgaria who are visiting Londonderry at the same time.
The Wolverhampton students got involved in the scheme through the city council’s Youth and Play Services which has helped to organise the exchange and its theme of citizenship and leadership.
The first leg of the exchange took place in April this year, when 12 students from Londonderry were welcomed to Wolverhampton.
The group from Londonderry enjoyed visits to a range of local venues including Wolverhampton Art Gallery and the Black Country Museum during their stay in Wolverhampton. The farewell party was held at the Molineux Stadium and was attended by the city’s former Mayor and Mayoress.
