St George's Day celebrations at library

Released: Friday, April 20, 2007

A Wolverhampton library will celebrate St George’s Day on Monday 23 April with a literary theme.

Spring Vale Library, in Bevan Avenue, will play host to three local writers as they look at English literature and what it means to live in England, now.

Emma Purshouse, Dorothy Baruch and Jeff Phelps will read poetry and extracts from fiction that explore the theme of English life. ‘Bridget Jones’ author Helen Fielding and local author Meera Syal who wrote ‘Anita and Me’ and ‘Life isn’t all Ha Ha Hee Hee’ are among those singled out for contributing important works detailing modern life in England.

Sharron Harrison, audience development manager for Wolverhampton Libraries said: “We felt it was important to celebrate St George’s Day, particularly as our St David’s Day event with Welsh poetry earlier this year was so popular. St George’s Day is also the birthday of Shakespeare so it seemed appropriate to mark the occasion with a literary event in libraries. It’s going to be very interesting to find out how very different experiences of living in England, now are reflected in modern literature.”

The event starts at 7pm and is free.

Further information can be obtained from Spring Vale library on 01902 556284 or by visiting Wolverhampton Libraries.

Issued by the press office.
