Kids' Kitchen Network to be launched at special event

Released: 13 April 2007

Experts in the field of healthy food such as Prue Leith, schools, the city council and big name manufacturers will come together at a special event in Wolverhampton to launch the Kids’ Kitchen Network.

The event will involve more than 160 visitors, including children aged seven to 11, school staff and caterers, providers of healthy food and drinks and professionals in the area of healthy school food. These professionals include influential schools caterer and policy advisor Jeanette Orrey and leading chef Rob Rees MBE as well as cook, restaurateur and food writer Prue Leith.

Big names including Britvic and local agencies including the Food Health Team, Community Food Initiatives Ltd and city council departments will all also be part of the event at The Molineux Conference Centre on Tuesday, April 17.

The event will mark the launch of Wolverhampton City Council’s Kids’ Kitchen Network. In the Kids’ Kitchen, children will learn practical cooking skills, and expand and test their knowledge about all kinds of food - what it tastes like, how it grows, how it gets to the shops and how simple ingredients can turn into tasty meals.

During the event representatives from more than 30 schools will enjoy workshops, free samples and practical cookery demonstrations. They will also have the chance to win prizes including a chilled lunchbox trolley, fruit and vegetable hampers and cookery books.

Jo Mathews, Wolverhampton City Council’s School Meals Development Officer, said: “Wolverhampton City Council is committed to giving the city’s children and their families the skills, resources and tools to support them in maintaining healthy lifestyles and is once again leading the way with this event to launch the Kids’ Kitchen Network.

“The network will encourage and enable young school chefs to talk to one another, share recipes and resources, and to enter competitions to win fantastic prizes for themselves and their schools.”
