Role of the Cabinet
The Cabinet is part of the Executive decision making process. Decisions about the day to day running of council services are taken by the Cabinet within the framework of the council’s constitution, budget and plans approved by the council.
The Cabinet advises Cabinet Members and the full Council on major items of policy and exercises overall control of financial affairs and budgeting.
The Cabinet also deals with the overall strategies for Corporate and Community Planning, Best Value and Emergency Planning. The Cabinet will also develop a clear annual programme of business, building on elements of the current Forward Plan together with a better and more focused Strategic agenda, which is regularly updated and published.
A sensible and ongoing dialogue will be established with the Scrutiny Board on that programme. Elements of it will form part of the work programme of scrutiny panels in a way to assist the development of executive policy.
Membership
The Cabinet is chaired by the Leader of the Council and comprises nine other councillors from the political party in power which is the Conservative Party. Each member of the Cabinet has a defined area of responsibility or portfolio.
Full details of membership and political balance of the Cabinet can be found in the decision making section.
