Reduction for people with disabilities

You may qualify for a reduction in your Council Tax if you or any member of your household is disabled and your home contains one or more of the following features:

  • A room set aside to provide facilities for the disabled person and mainly used by that person. For example, a room for dialysis equipment.
  • A second bathroom or kitchen provided to meet the needs of the disabled person. A reduction cannot be granted where the property a) has only one bathroom or kitchen even if this has been adapted to meet the needs of the disabled person, or b) has an additional toilet and washbasin because this does not constitute a second bathroom within the statutory provisions.
  • Enough floor space so that a wheelchair can be used indoors. The disabled person must possess a wheelchair and the use of a wheelchair indoors must be essential or of major importance to them.

If you qualify for a reduction, the amount of Council Tax payable will be based on the Band below that in which your property has been placed.

From 1 April 2000 you can receive this reduction even if your house is in Band A. The reduction will be one sixth of the Band A charge.

If you want more information about reductions for people with disabilities, contact the Local Taxes Division. Alternatively, you can make a claim via the online forms, or notify a change of circumstances.

Regular checking of all reductions will be carried out. If your circumstances change you must contact the Local Taxes Division immediately.
