Out of the £101.0 million of Council Tax income required to contribute towards the delivery of services across the City in 2008/09, £25.0 million or 25% will be paid by Government in the form of Council Tax rebates to households on low incomes. This will then leave a balance of £76 million to be collected by the City Council from Council Tax payers.

Overall, Council Tax payers contribute just over 42% of the £239 million required to deliver the Council's own services, together with those of the Police and Fire Services; the amounts payable by individual Council Tax payers represents only 32%.

All Council Tax transactions are brought together in a special Council account called the Collection Fund. The City Council has set a higher collection target for 2008/09 than last year.

As 52% of the City's homes are in property band A, the majority of the City's households will experience an increase of no more than 82 pence per week - of which 6 pence per week relates to Police and Fire. At least 30% will be shielded by the Council Tax Benefits system. If only one person lives in a property, they will be entitled to a 25% personal discount.
