Civic Centre - A brief history

When the building was opened by the then Prime Minister Jim Callaghan in 1979, brown polyester suits were in vogue and everyone was watching Starsky and Hutch.

Plans for a ‘dignified civic centre’ were first mooted in post-war Wolverhampton. The Express and Star of January 25, 1945, reported that ‘…a dignified civic centre will be the outstanding feature of the Wolverhampton of the future if bold plans prepared by the reconstruction committee of the council are eventually carried out.”

But when it was opened, the building did not receive untarnished approval with some critics claiming it was in the wrong position.

The architects for the Civic Centre were Clifford Culpin and Partners and the contractor was Taylor Woodrow Construction (Midlands) Ltd. The building was given a Civic Trust Award in 1979 and praised in the citation for being: “…exceedingly well planned and sensitively detailed…”
