Cardboard and plastic (white bag) -Frequently asked questions
Answers to common questions regarding plastics and cardboard collections
Why has the service been introduced?
We have challenging recycling targets and whilst your performance has been good there was a need to introduce further items to ensure we exceed our 30% recycling target.
What can I put into my bag?
We are collecting plastic bottles (fizzy pop bottles, toiletries and squash bottles) and all types of cardboard like cereal boxes cardboard packaging.
What size are the bags?
You will receive a white reusable bag to place your cardboard and plastics in, the bag will be 45cm by 45cm by 45cm.
Can I have an additional bag?
You are entitled to only one bag, however if you do have excess you can place excess items next to your white bag as long as they are separated into plastics and cardboard.
How will the service work?
We have purchased 7 new vehicles to run the plastics and cardboard collection. Cardboard and plastics will be collected from your house on your usual day of collection and sorted into a vehicle and transported to a transfer station, from there the items will be transported to Leicestershire for recycling.
Why can't all the recycled items go into one box?
We have different vehicles that collect the different items, so we ask you to separate your rubbish into your green box, white bag and black bin.
Why can't all plastics be taken?
Different types of plastic require different recycling processes and so cannot be recycled at one plant. We have chosen a contractor that can only accept one type of plastic, that found in plastic bottles. However we are constantly working on ways to help you recycle more of your waste.
Do detergent bottles need to be rinsed?
No, they will get washed as part of the recycling process.
What can I do if I live in a flat?
At the moment the cardboard and plastic recycling is only available to those on the kerbside scheme. We hope to introduce it to flats in the long term but currently we can only offer it to householders. You can always take your plastic and cardboard to one of our household waste and recycling centres.
Are the bags weatherproof? what if it breaks?
The bags should withstand all weathers and are expected to last in excess of 10 years. A new bag will be provided if the existing one has been lost, damaged beyond repair or stolen a new bag will be issued and the incident investigated.
Won't the bags blow away once emptied?
Once emptied the bags will be placed inside the your green recycling box.
What if I forget to put my bag out?
Your bag will be collected once a fortnight. If you forget to present your bag then you can take your recycling to one of the household waste and recycling centres or present the bag in a fortnights time.
What if I'm on the exemption list?
If you are currently on the exemption list then you will also be on the exemption list for plastics and cardboard.
If you wish to be placed on the exception list then please contact City Direct on 01902 551155.
