How is it recycled?

Once your food waste has been collected from your home it is bulked and collected before being taken to an Anaerobic Digester.

An anaerobic digester is basically a giant composter where food waste is made into useful products by tiny organisms.

The main product produced is biogas. The biogas is used to make heat and power which is put back into the National Grid.

The biogas can also be cleaned and used as road fuel.

Finally, any leftover material is so rich in nutrients that it can be used as fertiliser for agriculture.

By recycling food waste it produces useful products that mean less fossil fuels are used. This reduces greenhouse gas emissions such as methane and carbon dioxide and helps the environment.
