How are these figures calculated?
Officers carefully score the cleanliness standards across the city, recording the amount of litter, graffiti and fly posting.
Figures are submitted to central government for the BVPI 199 - a national Best Value Performance Indicator - which allows comparisons between other local authorities.
Why has the standard been developed?
The standard has been developed to measure the cleanliness of the local environment as the public perceive it.
The survey data provides valuable information on the extent of litter and the success of our street care and cleaning services.
Recent successes
The introduction of a new, specialised council graffiti team in 2007 has made a noticeable impact. The number of streets suffering graffiti has been reduced by 5% in the last year.
