Residents to be consulted over litter bin locations

We have just reviewed the way we consult our residents when fitting newly sited litter bins.

It is important that we consult the residents of Wolverhampton before fitting a litter bin in their neighbourhood.

Leaflet - Litter bins (238kb)

When are litter bins fitted?

Newly sited litter bins are fitted when a resident requests one and we agree that it will help combat heavy littering in the area.

However, we have learnt from experience that not everyone wants a litter bin outside their house or even in their street.

For this reason residents are now given the opportunity to be involved in deciding where the litter bin should be fitted and also to give us feed back on how effective the litter bin has been at reducing street litter.

What will be done?

When we identify a location to fit a litter bin, we will post the leaflets to the addresses in the near vicinity.

The leaflet will advise the residents where and when the litter bin will be fitted and, if they feel that it would be more effective somewhere else, give them the option to contact us and provide an alternative location.

We will listen to your views and do our very best to accommodate suggestions.

Why do we install litter bins?

Litter bins are a visual reminder to the public to be more responsible for their waste.

When we decide what kind of litter bin to fit and where to put it, consideration is given to the space available and where people are most likely to use it.

Facts and figures

There are 1,574 litter bins in and around the city. On average we get just one telephone call a week to let us know that a litter bin is full or overflowing and we respond straight away.

Over the course of a year we receive 160 requests for new or replacement litter bins. The cost to supply and fit litter bins varies between £100 for pole mounted and £330 for floor mounted.
