Disposing of hazardous household waste
What is hazardous waste?
Hazardous waste includes anything that could be harmful to human health or to the environment.
Typical examples of hazardous household waste include:
- car batteries
- engine oil
- garden chemicals
- bleach or other strong cleaners and disinfectants
- asbestos
- gas bottles
- solvents (including paint strippers and thinners)
Paint itself is not a hazardous household waste but should be handed to the site operator or put into the non-burnable waste skip.
The list above is not definitive, and if you have particular concerns about a type of waste you can contact the Environment Agency on Phone: 08708 506506
What should I do with it?
There are two main ways to get rid of hazardous waste:
Public recycling and waste disposal sites
The two public recycling and waste disposal sites at Anchor Lane, Lanesfield and Shaw Road, Bushbury will accept the above items - provided they are from households - except for asbestos.
When disposing of any of these items at a site, remember to:
- take all due care
- hand the item or substance to a member of staff
- not put any of the listed or items or substances you may be uncertain of directly into the skips.
Private contractors
We have a list of private waste disposal companies' contact details. You will need to contact the company directly to find out if they deal with this kind of waste.
