Planning policies for waste management
Businesses and households produce large amounts of waste, the treatment and disposal of which can cause major economic and environmental problems, and therefore needs to be carefully managed. The Wolverhampton Unitary Development Plan (UDP) contains planning policies which guide development involving waste management facilities, recycling and landfill activities, and other waste related development.
Regional targets for waste management have been established through the Regional Waste Strategy and Regional Planning Guidance which reflect the national requirement that all waste produced within a Region should be treated and disposed of within that Region.
Further information on planning and waste management can be found on the website for the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister, in particular Planning Policy Statement 10: Planning for Sustainable Waste Management.
In addition, information on waste management and recycling activities in the West Midlands is available on the website of the West Midlands Local Government Association.
Waste Management Strategy 2006 to 2026
Wolverhampton's Waste Management Strategy outlines our plans for waste management from 2006 to 2026.
Local authorities must find ways of reducing their dependence on disposing of waste to landfill by moving towards more sustainable ways of waste management whilst trying to reduce the growth in waste.
