Planning policies for residential development

One of the roles of the planning system is to ensure that new homes are provided in the right place and at the right time, whether through new development or the conversion of existing buildings.

A chapter of the Unitary Development Plan is dedicated to planning policies which guide  housing development in Wolverhampton. These include policies on housing allocations, affordable housing, housing density, residential care homes and open space requirements in new housing development.

The Council has also prepared supplementary guidance providing advise to applicants on residential design and on housing extensions. These can be found on the Council's planning guidance web page.

The Governments objectives and policies for housing development are set out in Planning Policy Guidance Note 3: Housing. In addition, the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister has prepared a booklet for developers and households, Planning - A Guide to Households, that provides information on the general planning principles and the procudure for making a planning application.

For further information about planning policies for residential development contact the Planning Policy team. For information about planning applications contact the Development Control team.
