Regional Spatial Strategy

The West Midlands Regional Assembly (as the Regional Planning Body) is responsible for producing and implementing the Regional Spatial Strategy (RSS) for the West Midlands, the strategic vision for improving the quality of life in the region. The current RSS was adopted in June 2004.

The main purpose of the RSS is to provide a long term land use and transport planning framework for the Region. It determines (amongst other things) the scale and distribution of housing and economic development across the Region, investment priorities for transport and sets out policies for enhancing the environment.

The RSS also guides the preparation of the Council's Local Development Framework (LDF). Together, the RSS and the LDF make up the statutory development plan for Wolverhampton, the starting point in the consideration of planning applications for the development or use of land.

Revision of RSS

The revision of the RSS is taking place in three phases.

Public consultation organised by the West Midlands Regional Assembly on the Spatial Options for Phase 2 of the RSS revision ran between 8 January and 5 March 2006.

The Spatial Options set out a wide range of questions and choices relating to the development of the Region up to 2021 and beyond. Answers to these questions will go a long way to deciding what sort of West Midlands we will have in twenty year's time.

A report on the outcomes of the Spatial Options consultation is now available on the West Midlands Regional Assembly website.
