History of Chapel Ash conservation area

Chapel Ash has been an important thoroughfare since medieval times and formed part of Thomas Telford’s improved Holyhead Road completed in 1823.

In 1849 St Mark’s church was built to serve the growing population of the town and by the late 19th century Chapel Ash had become one of Wolverhampton’s most fashionable shopping streets.

The architectural and historic character of the conservation area reflects this period of development.

Buildings are generally of 2 or 3 storeys and built of brick and Welsh slate.

Many have modern shopfronts although vestiges of historic shopfronts do survive. Most buildings are in office or retail use, including St Mark’s also recently converted to office use.

Whilst Chapel Ash did go into decline following the construction of the ring-road recent improvements in the public realm have given the area a much needed boost. However, heavy traffic and lack of parking are problems.
