Restaurants and catering
The Food and Environmental Safety service carry out regular inspections of all restaurants, caterers, shops and other premises that serve or sell food in Wolverhampton to ensure compliance with nationally agreed food hygiene and safety standards. Around 1100 inspections are made each year. In addition visits may be made to premises following complaints or requests for advice or information.
Inspections of food premises are carried out, as far as possible, without prior notification and are prioritised according to the degree of potential risk. Following an inspection every registered or known business is given a 'risk rating' in accordance with a national scheme. This ensures that higher risk premises are visited more frequently than those in lower risk categories.
As an alternative to inspection, the lowest risk food businesses may be contacted by phone or sent a self-assessment questionnaire. This avoids unnecessary bureaucracy for businesses and enables the service to concentrate work where it is needed most.
