Insects

Wolverhampton City Council provides an advisory service for the treatment of insects in domestic premises.

However the council does not offer a service for removing all types of insects at domestic premises.

The types of insects that the council treats for are bedbugs, cockroaches and fleas.

It is estimated that there are over a million different species of insect in the world.

Types of insect

Some of the most common insect pests are listed in links on the left hand side of this page.

Spiders, mites, slugs, centipedes, millipedes and woodlice are not members of the insect family but can be considered pests in their own right.

Identification of insects

If you have an insect pest in your property but you are unsure as to what it is then the Public Protection team will identify the pest and offer advice on its control. They will send the sample to a laboratory and forward any information to you as it becomes available.

To make use of the pest identification service please take note of the following points:

  • bring a sample of the pests to Public Protection reception (counter 14), 1st floor Civic Centre, St Peter's Square, Wolverhampton, WV1 1DA.
  • OR post a sample of the pest in a crush-proof container to the above address.
  • please ensure the sample is as whole or complete as possible - many insects are very similar and badly crushed insects can be impossible to identify
  • larvae and maggots are very difficult for us to identify until they turn into the adult.
  • if the sample is still alive ensure it is in a sealed container so that it cannot escape
  • the laboratory we use usually takes 10 days to 2 weeks to identify the pests and return the results.
