Carpet beetles

Wolverhampton City Council provides an advisory service for the treatment of carpet beetles in domestic premises.

However the council does not offer a service for removing carpet beetles at domestic premises.

Carpet beetles are one of the most commonly reported insect pests in houses.

Treatment of carpet beetles

Carpet beetles are normally associated with birds' nests and contaminated clothing or carpets.

The adults fly freely in gardens, feeding on pollen and nectar, however the larvae need a high protein diet and they are often found in birds' nests in roofs or eaves.

The larvae can cause damage to carpets, clothes, bedding, animal furs and skins but they are of no real health concern.

Treatment

The most effective way of dealing with an infestation of carpet beetles is to find the birds' nest and dispose of it. The most likley area to find the nest will be the roof, eaves or chimney.

A crawling insect powder or spray will kill the insects when sprayed directly onto them or into cracks and crevices where they have been seen. However this will be of limited long term use if the birds' nest or other infetsed article is not disposed of.

Contractors

If you cannot control the infestation yourself and require the services of a professional company we can provide advice on choosing a contractor.

Further advice

If you require further advice or information please contact Public Protection.
