Book lice

Wolverhampton City Council provides an advisory service for the treatment of book lice in domestic premises.

However the council does not offer a service for removing book lice at domestic premises.

Booklice (psocids) prefer warm, humid conditions and are commonly found in kitchens.

They eat flour, cereal, milk powder and moulds. The insects are very small and difficult to see (about 2mm long).

Controlling an infestation of book lice

To control an infestation of book lice you should:

  • dispose of all contaminated food
  • thoroughly clean all surfaces
  • try and reduce the heat or humidity in your kitchen, for example, by using more ventilation
  • a crawling insect spray can used, but in areas where food is prepared great care should be taken and you should follow all instructions on the packaging.

Hiring a private contractor

If you cannot eradicate the pests yourself and wish to hire a professional company we can provide advice on choosing a contractor.
