Birds
Certain birds are considered pests and can be destroyed by a suitably competent person in order to:
- prevent the spread of disease
- prevent damage to crops
- protect public health and safety.
Licences to take birds
Licences to take birds are issued by the Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA). Follow this link to view a copy of the licence or to read further information.
Contractors
It is recommended that a professional is hired if you wish to have bird pests exterminated - professionals should be able to despatch the birds so that they do not suffer.
The council's Public Protection provide both a proofing service to prevent birds perching or nesting on buildings and a bird destruction service to businesses. To discuss a quote please contact Public Protection.
If you choose to use a private company we provide advice on how to choose a contractor.
Cruelty
If any person kills a bird(s) in an unapproved or inhumane way they could be subject to prosecution.
