Bedbugs

Treating bedbugs

What is a bedbug?

The bedbug (Cimex lectularius) is a parasite and lives off human and animal blood.

Bedbugs feed at night. During the day they hide in cracks and crevices in beds, furniture and skirting boards.

The bites of bedbugs can cause irritation but they are not known for carrying diseases.

Domestic Premises

Treatment for bedbugs in domestic premises is free and is provided by the Council. An appointment can be made by contacting Public Protection.

Business Premises

A chargeable service for the treatment of bedbugs in business premises is available from the Council. For a free no obligation quote please contact Public Protection.

Carrying out treatments

Thorough treatment of the room including the bed frame with an insecticide will be required.

Insecticides can be obtained from most D.I.Y. stores, Garden Centres and certain supermarkets.

Many of the products are very similar and the pests that they are designed to kill are usually listed on the packaging itself.

Read the label

If you attempt to treat the Bed Bugs yourself you should ensure that you read the label/instructions on the packaging very carefully and wash your hands when you have finished.
